Materials Used
5.0 mm and 5.5 mm crochet hooks
Lion Brand Heartland yarn (worsted weight)
Yarn needle
Scissors
The Riverbend Headband is crocheted using Lion Brand Heartland, a medium (4) worsted-weight acrylic yarn loved for its softness, warmth, and beautiful colour palette. Its smooth texture allows the crossed single crochet stitches to really shine, highlighting the woven look while keeping the headband comfortable enough for everyday wear.
This yarn is also easy to care for and durable, making it a practical choice for accessories you’ll reach for often. It’s especially great for gifts and market makes since it holds its shape well and can be machine-washed and dried.
Yarn Details:
Weight: 4 – Medium (Worsted)
Fiber: 100% Acrylic
Care: Machine wash and dry
Substitution Tip:You can substitute any soft, smooth worsted-weight yarn with a similar gauge (approximately 16–18 stitches per 4 in / 10 cm). Keep in mind that different yarns may slightly change the texture and fit of the finished headband.

Sizing & Fit Notes
This headband is designed with approximately 2 inches of negative ease to ensure a snug, comfortable fit that stays in place during wear. The fabric has a bit of stretch, allowing it to fit securely without feeling tight.
Adjusting the size is easy. To customize the fit, simply start with an odd number of stitches and adjust the starting chain length to match your desired circumference. You can also modify the width by adding or subtracting rows to create a slimmer ear-warmer or a wider, extra-cozy headband.

Gauge Swatching
This pattern incorporates the cross-over single crochet stitch, resulting in a denser and more compact fabric. Consequently, the completed piece might narrow in width if the same hook size is used throughout.
To help you achieve the correct fit, I recommend:
Hook for Foundation Row: 5.0 mm
(Use this hook for the starting chain and Row 1 of single crochet)
Hook for Body of Pattern: 5.5 mm
(Switch to this hook once you begin the cross-over single crochet stitches)
Why swatch?
Each crocheter has a unique natural tension. Creating a small gauge swatch lets you verify your measurements before starting the complete project, ensuring your finished headband fits perfectly.

Fasten off, leaving a tail about 12" long to sew the headband together
Sewing The Headband Together
Lay the piece flat with the wrong side facing down and the right side facing up. Bring both short ends toward the center so they meet in the middle. (You will now be working on the wrong side of the headband.)
Fold each end in half to create four layers, aligning the edges neatly. “Sandwich” the layers together and sew across the edge, working through all four layers to secure the seam. Fasten off and weave in ends. Flip right side out.

Whether you’re crocheting for yourself, making thoughtful handmade gifts, or creating items for markets, the Riverbend Headband is a versatile project you’ll come back to again and again. Its simple stitch pattern, modern texture, and easy customization make it a relaxing and rewarding make. If you give this headband a try, I’d love to see your finished pieces—share your photos on Instagram and tag @jvcro_chet so I can cheer you on and feature your work. Happy crocheting!
